Throw the Talcum Powder Away: Johnson & Johnson Product Liability

In early May, a jury ordered Johnson and Johnson to pay a surviving South Dakota woman $55 million; the woman claimed that she developed ovarian cancer from repeatedly applying Johnson and Johnson talcum powder to her genital area. This verdict came shortly after a St. Louis jury ordered Johnson and Johnson to pay $72 million dollars to the estate of a woman who succumbed to ovarian cancer. At the moment, there are thousands of lawsuits around the country claiming that applying Johnson and Johnson products to the genital area caused fatal cancer.

While two juries found that Johnson and Johnson's talcum powder caused ovarian cancer, the medical community is still divided on the issue. According to Jim Salter of the Associated Press, the National Cancer Institute, the FDA, and the American Cancer Society have yet to find a link between talcum powder and ovarian cancer. In response to the May verdict, Johnson & Johnson spokeswoman Carol Goodrich released the following statement: "Unfortunately, the jury's decision goes against 30 years of studies by medical experts around the world that continue to support the safety of cosmetic talc." Contrarily, cancer specialist Dr. Adetunji Toriola of Washington University's Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis claims the data shows that women who use talcum powder increase their chances of developing ovarian cancer by 20 to 40 percent.

Some of the most common symptoms of ovarian cancer are general abdominal discomfort or pain, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, frequent urination, loss of appetite, unexplained weight gain or loss, abnormal bleeding from the vagina, and unusual fatigue. If you are experiencing these symptoms and you frequently use Johnson and Johnson products on your genital area, you should consult your physician to rule out ovarian cancer. If you developed ovarian cancer after frequently applying Johnson and Johnson products, you may be entitled to compensation.
