Reasons general surgeons could face medical malpractice lawsuits

Many Pittsburgh residents will need to have surgery this year. Although there are risks involved in surgery -- some which are serious -- most surgeries go as planned. But, when a surgeon makes a surgical errors the results can be unexpected and devastating for families.

A recent study looked into why general surgeons face medical malpractice lawsuits. Over 40 percent of the lawsuits involved the patient suffering an abnormal injury. These may have included operating on the wrong body part, burn injuries, damaging an organ or other mistake. The second most common reason a general surgeon would face a medical malpractice lawsuit is for the failure to diagnose a condition, followed by the failure to treat, not obtaining informed consent, medication mistakes and safety issues.

Thousands across the United States are affected by a surgical error each year. If a family believes their loved one has suffered because of an error, they may want to speak with a legal professional skilled in medical malpractice. An attorney has the experience to review medical records, x-rays and consult with medical experts to get the answers the family deserves. They are able to review all reports and determine if a surgical error occurred to cause the patient's injury. No matter how routine a surgery may be, anyone can be affected by a surgical error.

When a loved one suffers from an unexpected injury it is important to hold the negligent doctor accountable so that they don't harm anyone else. Compensation may be available for medical expenses, pain and suffering and other damages through a medical malpractice lawsuit.
