Medical malpractice continues to be an issue in Pennsylvania and the rest of country. The mistakes physicians and hospitals make can lead to the wrongful death of patients.
In one recent case, a man took his own life after painful complications from a medical procedure. He received a lumbar epidural steroid injection for his back pains. A lump developed on his lower back after the procedure. His doctors were not concerned by it. He later received a secondary injection. However, this worsened his medical condition. He contracted an infection which led to MRSA meningitis.
The infection caused him incessant pain his back and legs that made moving around torturous. In addition to this, he now also suffered from bowel problems and impotence. The man had already been diagnosed as bipolar at the time. Ultimately, he ended up killing himself.
Following a wrongful death action, his loved ones were recently awarded $2.88 million. State law allows survivors of the victims of medical malpractice to recover compensation for wrongful death.
The jury agreed that although the man took his own life, his actions were a result of his worsened medical condition, which was caused by the negligent actions of the plaintiffs. The jury deliberated for more than two days before making its decision.
Accepting the death of a loved one is hard enough. Knowing that the negligent actions of another person caused the death may make it even worse. A wrongful death action can provide a family a way of obtaining compensation and seeking justice.
