Bicycle fatalities reduced by helmet use

Bicycles account for about 2 percent of motor vehicle crashes here in the U.S., but this number is on the rise. According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), the most common serious injuries are to the head, which is a clear reminder of why it is so important for riders to wear helmets. While Pennsylvania does not require adults to wear helmets, riders under 12 years of age must use one if they are on pedal cycle. If there is a helmet law, however, riders are four times more likely to use a helmet than if there is no law.

Fireworks injuries on the rise

The July 4 holiday is now past. Unfortunately, it was not a safe one for everyone. While it will be months before comprehensive numbers on fireworks-related injuries are released, eight people lost their lives in 2017 (double the number of 2016) with another 12,900 (up from 11,000) injured bad enough for a trip to the emergency room. About two-thirds of fireworks related injuries each year occur between mid-June and mid-July with more than one third of the victims under the age of 15.

Avoiding the blind spots for commercial trucks can keep you safe

In many ways, the modern American economy depends on the work of commercial truck drivers. Over the last few decades, much of the railway infrastructure on this continent has deteriorated or been dismantled due to disuse. Additionally, transporting goods through the use of airplanes can be cost-prohibitive in many cases. Ground transportation is usually the fastest, safest and cheapest option.
