What are the common causes of truck crashes?

Rarely do motorists in Pennsylvania and other states travel on the interstate without any other vehicles present. Even during the late night hours, the chances of sharing the road with a commercial truck, such as a semi-truck or a tractor-trailer truck, are very high. While these massive trucks have the right to be on the road like any other vehicle that is safe for travel, commercial trucks do pose some major risks on the roadway that could cause a truck accident.

What are the common causes of truck crashes? Although there could be an endless list of causes for a commercial truck crash, the focus of this post will be on those caused by a negligent truck driver. Specifically, collisions that are related to the skills, decisions and driving behaviors of truck drivers.

One common cause is inadequate training of a truck driver. This results in the truck driver not being properly trained with driving techniques and ways to maneuver the rig. This presents major safety concerns, especially when it comes to defensive driving and avoiding possible crashes.

The next common cause is a compensation system that encourages truck drivers to travel farther and work more hours in order to make early deliveries. Such a situation violates federal trucking regulations and encourages truck drivers to work beyond their set hours of service. This practice could result in driver fatigue, which in turn is likely to cause a truck accident.

Unrealistic schedules and expectations of a trucking company that encourage drivers to rush and ignore safety concerns is the last common cause of truck accidents. The faster a commercial truck travels, the harder it is to control it. Therefore, speed presents a risk of a collision with other vehicles on the roadway.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a truck accident, it is important to understand the cause and who was at fault. Further investigation could help assign liability and assist with civil actions such as a personal injury claim.
