Report Finds Child Drownings Down 11 Percent Nationwide

Pool Safely's national public education campaign that works to reduce child (15 and under) drownings in swimming pools and spas appears to be having a positive effect. A recent report released by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission showed an 11 percent decrease in fatal child swimming pool drownings. Pool Safety Still a Concern

While fatality numbers are decreasing, swimming pool injuries are still a major cause for concern in the United States. Here are some other key findings of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's study:

  • On average 5,600 pool- or spa-related, hospital emergency department-treated nonfatal drowning injuries occurred each year from 2013 through 2015.
  • For children under the age of 15, approximately twice as many reported drownings involved male victims than reported female victims.
  • 77% of the reported drownings from 2011 through 2013, and an annual average of 77% of emergency department treated non-fatal drowning injuries from 2013 through 2015, involved children under the age of five.
  • Children between the ages of 12 months through 47 months represented 64% of estimated non-fatal drowning injuries for 2013 through 2015.
  • Approximately 56% of reported drownings occurred in-ground pools.
