LASIK eye surgery carries risks

For many Pittsburgh residents glasses are necessary to see clearly. Glasses can be annoying and expensive. The alternative, contact lenses, also require daily maintenance and care. LASIK eye surgery has become extremely popular as a surgery to correct eyes so that a person doesn't need glasses or contact lenses anymore. But, like all surgeries, surgical errors can occur.

LASIK eye surgery is the most popular type of refractive surgery. Refractive surgery is where the cornea is reshaped. LASIK surgery bends the light rays by removing corneal tissue so that it focuses more on the retina and therefore produces a clearer vision.

Although thousands of people undergo LASIK surgery each year there are risks involved. And, for many patients their vision is not corrected as promised. These risks can lead to a worsened condition. The risks involve under-correction -- where the patient does not receive clear vision --, the surgeon can take too much tissue from the eye resulting in an overcorrection and difficulty seeing at night. Loss of vision may also occur because of surgical complications.

If a patient believes they have suffered unexpected complications because of LASIK surgery they may want to speak with a legal professional skilled in medical malpractice. There are many times when the risks are not fully disclosed with patients and unexpected side effects occur, many of them serious. An attorney can review the medical records and determine what went wrong in the surgery. Compensation may be available for unexpected medical expenses, pain and suffering and other damages.
