According to the U.S. House of Representatives, Committee on Government Reform - Minority Office, over 17,000 nursing homes in the United States care for more than 1.6 million residents, a figure that is expected to quadruple to 6.6 million residents by 2050.
Pennsylvania became the first state to publicly report the number of patients who contracted an infection while in one of its 168 hospitals last year. A recent report issued by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4) indicates that deadly hospital infections are on the rise. According to the report, in Pennsylvania, more than 19,000 patients acquired infections at the hospital resulting in 2.400 deaths. Nationally, 90,000 people died from hospital acquired infections.
According to the Center for Injury Research & Prevention at The Childrens' Hospital of Philadelphia, young drivers between the ages 16-20 years are at a high risk for both fatal and non-fatal crashes, with the highest per capita and per-mile-driven crash rate of any age group. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of teen deaths, accounting for 44% of teen fatalities in the U.S. If these crash fatalities continue without intervention, 100,000 adolescents and young adults will die in young driver crashes (drivers between the ages of 16 and 24 years) in the U.S. over the next 10 years.
